Medical Assistant for Family Medicine (Non-Certified) Job Summary The primary purpose of your job is to assist with the delivery of patient care in accordance with current applicable Federal, State and Local standards, guidelines, regulations and established procedures as may be directed by the Administrator, to assure the highest degree of quality care and safety be maintained. Does this position require Patient Care?Yes Essential Functions-Plans appropriately for patient care: a) Anticipates needs of patient visits to optimize provider time. If applicable, ensure that necessary paperwork has been completed, and results are received prior to visit with provider. b) Completes patient forms as necessary for department (included but not limited to worker's compensation forms, school/college exam forms, contract, Medicare questionnaires etc.). c) Manage incoming documents. Fax and/or scan documents per office protocols. -Performs patient intake functions as follows: a) Verify patients using two patient identifiers. b) Proactively monitor provider schedules to ensure that patients are seen in a timely and efficient manner. Keep patients and front desk staff alerted to delays. c) Obtains necessary vital signs per department standard operating procedure (SOP). d) Record visit intake information clearly and accurately per department SOP. e) Review preventative health needs if applicable to department. Place orders as needed depending on department workflow and SOP. f) Review and update medication list, allergies, histories, smoking status, and social determinants of health as applicable to department. g) Demonstrate proficiency in EHR, consistently and accurately documenting information in correct fields. h) Prioritize delegated tasks based on patient care needs and office activities. -Effectively communicate with patients/family members in a manner that is consistent with MVH service expectations whether verbally or written in any form. a) Inform patients of test results and/or relay recommendations based on the specific direction/instruction of the physician, provider, RN or LPN. b) Thoroughly document all patient telephone conversations in real time and accurately relay patient questions/ request to the provider. c) Participate in team-based care and patient education initiatives to support the health and wellness of patients. -Prepare and assist with office procedures as applicable to department. a) Per department SOP, assist providers with office-based procedures and prepare supplies and patient for the care they will be receiving. Label and package specimens resulting from office-based procedures and store in the appropriate manner until transported to lab. b) Clean and sterilize exam room and instruments using proper precaution per office protocol. -Provide individualized, age-specific care to patients under the specific orders of physician or provider. a) If applicable to department, properly administer and document immunizations ordered by providers. Ensure that all appropriate documents, vaccine information sheets, etc. are provided to patients/guardians. b) If applicable to department, ensure the integrity of vaccines as per regulatory guidelines and applicable policies and procedures prior to administering. Comply with all applicable inventory and reporting requirements. Review all expiration dates prior to administration. c) If applicable to department, demonstrate understanding of appropriate immunization schedules for patient population. d) Perform other related clinical duties under the specific order of a provider, including but not limited to EKG's, vision exams, hearing exams, pulse oximetry, ear lavage, based on specific department protocols. e) Maintain all safety and compliance logs as indicated and required by office protocol and regulatory requirements. f) Recognize limitations and seek advice and direction from the physician, provider, supervisor, or other appropriate clinical staff member when needed. -Supports the general overall functioning of the office. a) Accept assignments for patient care within the scope of job and current standards of practice. b) Perform administrative functions, including but not limited to scheduling appointments, confirming scheduled visits, managing scheduling work queues, managing in baskets messages, and scanning documents, as needed based on overall department staffing levels. c) If applicable to department, place orders for appointments per the instructions of the physician or provider, paying close attention to scheduling guidelines. d) Process prescription refills appropriate per office protocol. e) Stock patient rooms per department standards, keeping supply rooms organized and in compliance with regulatory standards. Notify Practice Manger or follow department workflow when supplies are below par level. f) Attend department huddles and meetings. Communicate relevant information to team members as needed. g) Perform all other duties as assigned/directed. Qualifications Education Other Certificate/Diploma Related Field of Study required and High School Diploma or Equivalent required Can this role accept experience in lieu of a degree? No Licenses and Credentials Basic Life Support [BLS] - completed upon 90 days of employment Experience Medical Assistant experience in an ambulatory setting 0-1 year preferred and A minimum of 6 months employment in an ambulatory physician practice setting in the last 3 years 0-1 year preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities - Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action in a timely fashion. - Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with staff, patients, family members, visitors, government agencies/personnel and the general public. - Must possess the willingness to work harmoniously with professional and non-professional personnel and the general public. - Must be able to read, write legibly, speak clearly and understand the English language. - Must meet 1 of the following within 1 year of employment if not completed prior to hire date: • Preferred successful completion of Medical Assistant School/Program or comparable training within related discipline. • Enrollment in program to enhance MA skills: Registered (RMA), Certified (CMA), Certified Clinical MA (CCMA). • Enrollment in program leading to further skill development with medical field (including but not limited to CNA, EMT, LPN, RN, CNM, NP, PA, MD, DO).
