Driven by the Society's vision to be more globally known for its impactful Explorer-led programs, the Division’s strategic minds develop communications to promote the Society’s Explorers, programs and key priorities. The Division comprises four teams: Strategic Communications, Executive Communications, Internal Communications and Social Media. The Social Media team amplifies the mission and work of the Society and its community of Explorers across the organization’s social media platforms. The Director, Social Media is responsible for supporting the implementation and execution of a social media strategy that engages the Society’s Explorer community and leverages their work, discoveries, assets, impact and contributions across the organization’s channels. Your Impact Responsibilities Include Social Media Strategy: Working closely with the Communications leadership and leaders from across the organization who engage with our Explorer community, oversee the implementation and execution of an annual social media strategy that centers on direct contributions from the Society’s community of Explorers, including scientists, storytellers, educators and more. Ensure that the strategy is distinct from the National Geographic-branded social media channels operating through the Society’s media partnership with The Walt Disney Company, and that the content considered for the Society’s platforms is the right fit for its owned platforms vs. broader distribution via the Disney partnership. Build the environment within the Explorer Community and the Society for successful execution of this strategy, including deep engagement with the Explorers — working closely with the Society’s Explorer Engagement and programmatic teams — and the operational teams at the Society, including Legal and Business Affairs for the necessary agreements, clearances and rights. Ensure that direct reports are producing according to the Society’s processes, policies and standards. Foster innovation and team development. Invest time in mentoring staff to ensure their professional growth. Align efforts to existing resources. Establish high-level KPIs to assess impact and adjust tactics as needed. Develop and recommend strategies and policies for consideration by senior management. (25%) Social Listening: Leverage the Society’s enterprise tools for robust social listening — monitoring and reporting regularly on content and conversations about the Society, its community of Explorers, the broader National Geographic brand and other relevant topics.
