Job purpose:

The role of the Occupational Therapist is to provide in-home services to identified adults with vision loss and blindness. Responsibilities will include performing home safety and environmental assessments, assessing clients’ abilities to perform activities of daily living, and provide adaptive strategies and techniques to support safety and independence in the home.

Job status:

· Per Diem: 3-5 hours per week

· Must be 18 years of age or older.

· Experience working with adults with physical disabilities.

· Having a valid NJ Driver’s License to perform home visits.

· Familiarity with the Zoom virtual platform

· Proficient computer skills

Preferred:

· Post-graduate education in low vision

· Experience working with adults with vision loss and blindness.

· Bi-lingual and fluent in English & Spanish

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

· Perform home environmental assessments- identify potential safety hazards.

· Evaluate lighting and contrast needs.

· Make recommendations and provide accommodations to improve accessibility to appliances.

· Address basic magnification and reading needs.

· Refer clients to VLANJ center-based programs for further skills training in Independent Living Skills and Technology

· Ability to work with minimal supervision.

  • Capable of handling multiple priorities
  • Possess strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively with clients, family members, VLANJ staff, and physicians.
  • Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Possess effective observational and teaching skills.

· Possess proficient computer skills- using Windows PC

Qualifications:

· Bachelor’s degree or master’s degree in occupational therapy
