Job Summary:
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced freelance Medical News Journalist to join our dynamic editorial team. The ideal candidate will be passionate about medical science, possess exceptional writing abilities, and have a proven track record of translating complex medical information into clear, concise, and compelling content for a physician audience. This role is critical in delivering breaking news from the cutting edge of medical research, new drug approvals, and major medical conferences.
Responsibilities:
Monitor and Identify Breaking News: Proactively track and identify significant breaking medical news from a variety of sources, including peer-reviewed journals, regulatory bodies (e.g., FDA, EMA), pharmaceutical companies, and major medical meetings.
Research and Analyze Complex Data: Conduct in-depth research, critically analyze scientific literature, clinical trial data, and regulatory documents to understand the nuances and implications of medical advancements.
Write Crisp, Physician-Level Copy: Produce accurate, balanced, and engaging news articles, summaries, and analyses tailored specifically for a physician audience. Content must be precise, avoid jargon where possible (or clearly explain it), and maintain a high level of scientific rigor.
Cover Medical Meetings: Attend (virtually or in-person) key medical conferences and symposia, synthesize presentations and discussions, and report on significant findings in a timely manner.
Interview Experts: Conduct interviews with leading researchers, clinicians, and key opinion leaders to gather insights and provide diverse perspectives on breaking news.
Ensure Accuracy and Compliance: Adhere to strict editorial guidelines, journalistic ethics, and compliance standards, ensuring all content is factually accurate, unbiased, and properly referenced.
Collaborate with Editorial Team: Work closely with editors, peer reviewers, and graphic designers to refine content, optimize for various platforms, and ensure a cohesive editorial voice.
Stay Abreast of Trends: Continuously monitor developments in various medical specialties, healthcare policy, and the pharmaceutical industry.
Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, Life Sciences, Medicine, or a related field. An advanced degree (Master's, Ph.D., MD, PharmD) is highly preferred.
Experience: Minimum of 3- 5 years of experience as a medical journalist, science writer, or similar role, with a strong portfolio demonstrating experience writing for a physician or healthcare professional audience.
Medical Knowledge: Deep understanding of medical terminology, disease states, clinical research methodologies, drug development processes, and regulatory affairs.
Exceptional Writing Skills: Proven ability to write clear, concise, accurate, and engaging copy under tight deadlines. Demonstrated ability to translate complex scientific information into digestible content for busy physicians.
Research and Analytical Skills: Strong analytical and critical thinking skills with the ability to interpret and synthesize complex scientific data.
Attention to Detail: Meticulous attention to detail and commitment to accuracy in all written work.
Self-Motivated and Independent: Ability to work independently, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and prioritize tasks effectively in a fast-paced environment.
Technological Proficiency: Proficient in using content management systems, research databases, and other relevant digital tools.
Ethical Standards: Adherence to the highest journalistic and ethical standards.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with SEO best practices for medical content.
Familiarity with digital publishing platforms and multimedia content creation.
Existing network of contacts within the medical community.
