Video Producer - Vertical & Breaking News
The McClatchy Media Company is seeking a creative and fast-moving Video Producer with strong news judgment to join our Video & Multimedia team. This role will focus on creating and coaching on vertical video content for local and breaking news, with a strong emphasis on user needs model storytelling that resonates with our audiences.
You’ll work with visuals producers and newsroom editors and reporters across McClatchy’s 30 newsrooms to help elevate our visual storytelling. This position requires both speed and creativity, along with a collaborative mindset and the ability to turn news moments into must-watch mobile video.
Key Responsibilities In this role, you will need to:
- Collaborate with newsroom teams to identify strong video opportunities, including visuals, scripting and formats that align with audience and mission needs.
- Produce compelling vertical video (9x16) content tied to local news content verticals as well as accountability journalism and breaking news.
- Write clear, concise video scripts optimized for mobile-first audiences.
- Edit scripts and video for accuracy, clarity and local relevance.
- Provide training and guidance to local newsroom staff on best practices for vertical video production and distribution.
- Work with the multimedia team to optimize video strategy on our news sites that serve our digital subscribers, leveraging strong analytics and engagement data.
- Contribute to building scalable workflows for short-form and long-form video content.
- Work closely with a team of video and multimedia producers who support McClatchy newsrooms across the country, under the direction of the Senior Video and Multimedia Strategy Editor.
- Assist with live-stream events, often using StreamYard, as needed.
What you’ll bring:
- A college degree or relevant equivalent experience.
- At least 2 years of experience producing video in a news environment.
- Proven ability to turn news stories and community-based topics into highly engaging visual stories.
- Strong news judgment and an understanding of journalistic standards and ethics.
- Proficiency in Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe Creative Suite, and/or Canva, CapCut or other modern mobile editing tools.
- Ability to multitask and work under deadlines while maintaining accuracy and quality.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a remote and distributed team.
- Interest in the intersection of vertical video and journalism.
- Knowledge of SEO and content strategy for YouTube or social video platforms is a plus.

The anticipated base pay range for this position is between $23 and $27 per hour. Individual base pay may vary within that range depending on job-related knowledge, skills, experience, department equity and relevant education.
