The Hydrologic Sciences and Remote Sensing Laboratory at the University of Minnesota, Saint Anthony Falls Laboratory, is seeking highly motivated PhD students and postdoctoral researchers to join a research project focused on advancing the understanding of freeze–thaw dynamics in the Arctic and Boreal Zones (ABZ). This initiative aims to address critical questions regarding the rapidly changing Arctic landscape, with the goal of informing policy and strengthening U.S. leadership in Arctic resource and ecosystem management.

Successful candidates will work at the intersection of satellite remote sensing, land surface modeling, and data assimilation, in close collaboration with scientists from NASA Goddard Space Flight Center.

Research Focus

– Analysis of optical and microwave satellite observations

– Application of radiative transfer models

– Utilization of machine learning and deep learning techniques

– Integration of land surface models with data assimilation frameworks

Minimum Qualifications

– For PhD applicants: B.S. or M.S. in Civil/Environmental Engineering, Earth & Atmospheric Sciences, Remote Sensing, or related fields

– For Postdoctoral applicants: Ph.D. in a relevant discipline

– Proficiency in Python or MATLAB

– Strong background in data analysis and hydrologic modeling

– Excellent communication and problem-solving abilities
