The Associate Director of Professional Coding is a key leadership role within a multi-facility organization, responsible for overseeing the professional coding operations across a network of hospitals, clinics, and affiliated practices. This role ensures the accuracy, compliance, and timeliness of coding for professional services, aligning with federal and state regulations, payer requirements, and organizational goals.

Reporting to the Sr. Director of Revenue Cycle, the Associate Director provides strategic and operational direction to a team of professional coders and coding supervisors. The role includes responsibility for operational oversight of coding workflows, productivity benchmarks, staff development, and collaboration with clinical, financial, and compliance departments.

The Associate Director plays a critical role in optimizing revenue integrity, minimizing compliance risks, and supporting the overall financial health of the organization. This position requires a strong understanding of CPT, HCPCS, and ICD-10-CM coding, physician documentation requirements, and medical billing processes. It also involves a continuous focus on process improvement, regulatory changes, and the implementation of technology to streamline coding operations.

    Position Responsibilities:
  • Provide leadership and oversight for professional coding operations across the UI Health Care system.
  • Develop and execute strategic initiatives for professional coding operations that align with organizational goals for compliance, revenue integrity, and operational efficiency.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on matters related to professional coding, provider documentation, and regulatory compliance.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional leadership to drive initiatives that improve coding performance and support system priorities.
  • Monitor federal and state regulations and ensure policies, procedures, and workflows remain compliant and up to date.
  • Establish professional coding standards, workflows, and performance benchmarks to ensure accuracy, consistency, and scalability across all facilities and specialties.
  • Leverage data analytics to identify coding trends, revenue opportunities, documentation gaps, and systemic issues impacting reimbursement or compliance.
  • Develop and maintain a provider engagement strategy to promote collaborative processes, coding integrity, and responsive communication.
  • Drive a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and operational excellence through change management, communication, and team empowerment.
  • Manage department budgets, resource allocation, staffing models, and vendor relationships related to coding services.

Location: Hospital Support Services Building (HSSB) located in Coralville, IA

This position is eligible to participate in remote work and applicants who wish to work remotely will be considered. Training will be held either ONSITE or via Hybrid (Inhouse/Zoom) from the HSSB building at a length determined by the supervisor. Remote eligibility will be evaluated upon a satisfactory job training opportunity. Per policy, work arrangements will be reviewed annually and must comply with the remote work program and related policies and employee travel policy when working at a remote location.

    Equipment:
  • Onsite – The department will provide a workstation which contains 3 (three) monitors, laptop/power cord, docking station/power cord, keyboard, mouse, headset, and desk supplies can be found in the supply closet.
  • Hybrid – while working onsite, the department will provide a workstation which contains 3 (three) monitors, a laptop/power cord, docking station/power cord, keyboard, mouse, headset, and desk supplies. When working offsite, the employee will take their laptop/power cord to carry back and forth, a second docking station/power cord to keep offsite. Prior to working offsite, the employee, at their own expense, will need to supply 2 (two) monitors, in addition to the university-issued laptop, which will serve as a third monitor due to its built-in camera function, a keyboard, and a mouse. Employees will be required to provide a photo of the domicile office setup and perform an internet speed test by visiting https://www.speedtest.net/ with a minimum 30mb download and 10mb upload reflecting a University of Iowa IP address, then providing a screenshot of the speed test to HR. The employee’s remote workstation should replicate the onsite setup as if they were working onsite at HSSB.
  • Remote - when working offsite, the department will provide the employee a laptop/power cord, docking station/power cord, headset.     Education Required:
  • Bachelor's degree in Health Information Management, Healthcare Administration, or related field required; Master’s degree preferred.
  • RHIA, RHIT, CPC, or CCS-P certification required.
    Required Qualifications:
  • Minimum of 7 years of progressive experience in professional coding, with at least 3 years in a supervisory or leadership role.
  • Proven ability to lead teams, manage performance, and drive process improvements.
  • Experience in large, multi-specialty healthcare systems or academic medical centers.
  • Strong knowledge of regulatory requirements and healthcare reimbursement methodologies.
  • Ability to analyze complex data and apply critical thinking skills.
  • Proven ability to effectively plan, prioritize, and organize tasks to achieve strategic goals.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with MS Word, PowerPoint, and Excel, including database and spreadsheet analysis.
    Desirable Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of UI Health Care policies and procedures
  • Experience with EPIC
