Software Engineer III, Payments

Remote, USA Full-time Posted 2025-07-27

Software Engineer III, Payments
Remote Location: Austin, TX or Washington DC

Position Summary

This software engineering position will reside on a Payments Engineering Team. The Payments Engineering Team’s primary mission is to enable HackerOne to move money between customers and hackers in a compliant, flexible, and safe manner. This role primarily focuses on the back-end but having some front-end experience would be helpful for the team.

In the near future, the team will expand their domain ownership and start maintaining and developing other platform components of the HackerOne platform. You'll be expected to work on backend-heavy payment processing code and touch the frontend occasionally. Ideally, you'll have a strong foundation in either, but want to learn the other as well.

At HackerOne, we embrace a Flexible Work approach, enabling our team members to work remotely while maintaining productivity and collaboration. We are seeking candidates located in Austin, TX or Washington DC, and the surrounding metropolitan areas, to facilitate occasional in-person interactions as needed. While the position is primarily remote, there will be periodic in-person requirements to support team collaboration and foster stronger connections. This approach ensures flexibility while providing opportunities to build meaningful in-person relationships that strengthen our team and company culture.

    What You Will Do
  • Your first 30 days will be focusing on getting to know our HackerOnies. You will join your new squad and be onboarded to engineering - get to learn the technology stack (Ruby on Rails + GraphQL + ReactJS + many more).
  • Beyond 90 days, you will be a full-fledged software engineer. By that time, you will be able to understand the business value of our products and features and the needs of our customers, and you can translate feature requests into simple but robust engineering (or non-engineering) solutions.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to drive innovation, execution, and alignment across multiple domains
  • Contribute to a positive team culture by supporting and learning from senior and staff engineers
  • Take ownership of your personal growth and professional development
  • Apply your technical skills in a people-focused environment, helping build scalable solutions while fostering strong team relationships
    Minimum Qualifications
  • 4+ years of experience in full-stack software engineering, especially within a SAAS environment.
  • Experience developing applications with Ruby on Rails and ReactJS.
  • Successful track record of shipping projects quickly with multiple dependencies across technical and non-technical teams.
  • Excellent team player with strong communication skills.
  • Experience in payment systems such as bank transfers, PayPal, Stripe, and Bitcoin.
    Preferred Qualifications
  • Expertise or interest in generative AI, ElasticSearch / OpenSearch.
