Position Title: ASL Teacher Department: Related Services Location: Hillsboro School District - Hillsboro High School Salary: Per negotiated Contract, Licensed Salary Schedule Bargaining Unit: NWEA Start Date: AUGUST 21, 2023 FTE: 0.33 - 2.64 hours per day NW REGIONAL ESD'S MISSION STATEMENT: In partnership with the communities we serve, Northwest Regional ESD improves student learning by providing equitable access to high quality services and support. GENERAL DESCRIPTION: To provide academic and linguistic instruction in American Sign Language. Serves as the instructor for American Sign Language to fulfill foreign language requirements for high school students. Develop and implement curriculum in vocabulary and linguistic structures of ASL as well as the cultural perspectives on the Deaf Community. Provide instruction in receptive and expressive processes of ASL. QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required. Oregon teaching license with an endorsement in any area AND competency in ASL demonstrated by documentation of ONE of the following: 2. Qualified or Professional certification by the American Sign Language Teacher?s Association 3. Oregon Quality Assurance Screening Level III or higher in the Interpreter section 4. CI certification from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf. 5. Valid certification from the National Association of the Deaf Level IV or higher 6. Masters degree in ASL, Deaf studies, Linguistics or a related field preferred 7. Valid Oregon drivers license KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES: 1. Experience teaching ASL/English preferred. 2. Ability to develop and implement curriculum. 3. Experience and involvement in the Deaf Community. 4. Fine motor skills to perfect acceptable ASL signs. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Include the following. Performs some or all of the following tasks. Other Duties may be assigned. The duties listed below are not inclusive, but characteristic of the type and level of work assigned for this position. A. Select and develop appropriate curriculum for the instruction of ASL. B. Select and develop assessments which would evaluate student competence in expressive and receptive aspects of ASL. C. Prepare quarterly reports and maintain related documents indicating student progress. D. Write lesson plans that are aligned with objectives and goals of curriculum and ASL Content Standards E. Provide requisite data to the supervisor within designated deadlines. F. Develop and deliver instruction to secondary school students in assigned curriculum area, using self-designed and district adopted curriculum aligned with Oregon common core standards for subject area G. Assess student progress regularly, keeping accurate records and providing progress reports as required, and communicating with parents as deemed necessary H. Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interest level of the students; develop rules of classroom behavior which are enforced in a fair and just manner I. Differentiate curriculum to meet the individual learning needs and interests of students with a wide range of performance levels J. Employ a variety of instructional techniques to meet the learning needs of a diverse group of learners K. Support special educator in the development of IEP goals for each student that addresses their needs comprehensively L. Participate fully with other educational team members in the decisions regarding the students in the program M. Use appropriate strategies (behavioral and instructional), materials, and other available resources that will assist the student to achieve instructional goals and objectives, and also behavioral goals addressed in the IEP N. Develop and maintain effective communication with team members, parents, colleagues and administrators O. Attend scheduled staff meetings and building/department trainings P. Perform other reasonably related duties as assigned.
